The Art of Back-Strap Loom Weaving:
Creating a Zacualpa textile is a labor-intensive process that begins long before the first thread is woven. The artisan starts with raw cotton, which must be washed, combed, and spun into yarn. The warp threads are then carefully measured and stretched to the desired length before being attached to a traditional back-strap loom.

As the weaving progresses, colored yarns are skillfully incorporated to create decorative brocade patterns directly into the fabric. The weaver controls the tension of the loom using a strap secured around her back, adjusting the weave by leaning forward or backward. This ancient technique requires exceptional skill, patience, and precision, resulting in a textile that is both beautiful and culturally significant.
