The Art of the Back-Strap Loom:
This bedspread is born from an ancient, labor-intensive Mayan weaving technique. The artisan begins with raw cotton, carefully washing, combing, and spinning it by hand. After stretching the long warp threads on a warping board, she secures them to a traditional back-strap loom. By leaning forward and backward to adjust the loom's tension with her own body, the weaver meticulously binds the threads. As the fabric is formed, vibrant colored yarns are woven directly into the cloth—a masterful technique known as brocading—to create the exquisite decorative patterns.
